About Brighten
Calm, strategic bookkeeping support that actually feels good.
No shame spiral, jargon you have to Google (or ask ChatGPT about) afterward, or cold accountant energy.
You're not alone
You're not the only one who's ever Googled "what even is a chart of accounts."
Most of the business owners we work with are juggling a lot. Bookkeeping becomes the thing that gets pushed to the background, handled well enough maybe, but not really working for them. Until something catches their attention and suddenly it feels a lot more urgent than it did last Tuesday.
If your books are getting done but not telling you much, or if you've been running on gut instinct and crossed fingers more than you'd like to admit, you're in exactly the right place.
This isn't just about filing things on time. It's about having numbers you can actually trust, reports that mean something, and a business that feels clear and under control.
Nearly 20 years in bookkeeping
Serving Canadian small business owners
Trades, contractors, coaches, creatives & consultants
Meet Katie
Hi, I'm Katie.
I've spent nearly 20 years in bookkeeping, working with Canadian small business owners across a wide range of industries, from tradespeople and contractors to coaches, creatives, and consultants. The businesses look different. The financial questions are usually pretty similar.
Most business owners don't actually have a numbers problem. They have a clarity problem.
What I noticed early on, and what eventually became the whole point of Brighten, is that most business owners don't actually have a numbers problem. They have a clarity problem. The books are getting done, technically. But nobody's explaining what they mean. Nobody's flagging what to watch. Nobody's connecting the numbers to the decisions that actually matter. And so the business owner is sitting there with a tidy set of reports and still not really sure where they stand.
That's the gap I built Brighten to fill. Not just accurate books, but a clear explanation of what those books are telling you, every single month, in plain language, without the jargon or the cold professional distance that makes people feel like they're bothering someone just by asking a question.
I also built this practice to run a specific way, calmly, consistently, and on top of things rather than reactive. Part of that is just how I'm wired. Part of it is that I have a kid whose life genuinely requires structure and routine to work, which means my business has to run the same way. There's no room for chaos on my end, and honestly, there shouldn't be on yours either. You deserve a bookkeeper whose own house is in order.
That's what Brighten is. Calm, structured, strategic support from someone who actually knows your business and wants you to understand it too.
